High-Precision Machining for Strong, Low-Friction & Dimensionally Stable POM Parts
Custom Prototypes and Production with Advanced CNC Capabilities

What is POM CNC Machining?

POM (acetal, e.g., Delrin®) is a stiff, low-friction engineering plastic with excellent wear, dimensional stability, and moisture resistance. With sharp tools and stable fixturing, it machines very cleanly for precision bushings, gears, manifolds, and fixtures.

  • Tooling: Sharp polished carbide / O-flute; positive rake to shear, not rub.
  • Chip control: Aim for continuous chips; avoid rubbing that causes heat and whitening.
  • Feeds/Speeds: Moderate–high SFM with steady chip load; add a light finish pass on show faces.
  • Workholding: Soft jaws or vacuum; support thin webs to prevent chatter.

Key Considerations

POM-H (homopolymer) offers slightly higher strength and hardness; POM-C (copolymer) provides better hot-water and chemical resistance. Keep tools sharp, clear chips, and use a light deburr to maintain color and edge quality.

For tight flatness on large plates: rough → let the part relax → finish. Avoid excessive clamping that can imprint surfaces.

Precision POM CNC Machining

3/4/5-axis milling in acetal for pockets, plates, and housings

3, 4, 5-Axis CNC Milling

Clean pockets, slots, and contours with minimal burr. Balanced holders and sharp tools deliver uniform textures and tight tolerances on cosmetic faces.

CNC turning/mill-turn in acetal for bushings, pulleys, and seals

CNC Turning & Mill-Turn

Smooth OD/ID finishes and roundness on bushings and pulleys. Positive-rake inserts reduce fuzz; add a final sizing pass on critical diameters.

Machinable POM Grades

Pick strength, wear, chemical/UV resistance, and antistatic properties to fit your spec.

POM-H (Delrin) precision parts (3:2)

POM-H (Delrin® / Homopolymer)

  • Higher strength/hardness, crisp edges
  • Very low friction & wear
  • Great dimensional stability
  • Gears, pulleys, cams

Use sharp O-flute/carbine, steady feed; add a light finish pass on cosmetic features.

POM-C (copolymer) manifold and plates (3:2)

POM-C (Copolymer)

  • Better hot-water & chemical resistance
  • Lower centerline porosity risk
  • Stable for large plates/manifolds
  • Flow components, fixtures

Similar parameters to POM-H; for big plates, rough → relax → finish for flatness.

PTFE/MoS2 lubricated acetal wear parts (3:2)

Lubricated (PTFE / MoS₂)

  • Lower friction, improved wear life
  • Great for dry-running sliders/guides
  • Chip behavior slightly different
  • Conveyors, automation, tooling

Maintain sharp edges; tune feeds to avoid smearing on low-friction surfaces.

UV-stable acetal parts for outdoor use (3:2)

UV-Stable / Outdoor

  • Improved color/strength retention outdoors
  • Enclosures, covers, hardware
  • Machines like standard POM
  • Check pigment/finish specs

Confirm film/coating removal and desired surface texture before finishing.

ESD-safe acetal fixtures and trays (3:2)

ESD / Antistatic

  • Static-safe covers, trays, nests
  • Fillers can change chip flow
  • Surface resistivity to spec
  • Semiconductor handling

Adjust feeds for sharp edges; verify resistivity targets and cleaning/handling processes.

Material Machining Guide

POM CNC Machining: Selection, Process, and Quality Notes

POM is commonly considered for precision gears, sliders, spacers, bushings, and low-friction parts. It is selected because of excellent machinability and dimensional stability. For CNC machining, the final result depends on material grade, toolpath strategy, tolerance allocation, surface finish, and inspection planning.

Good Fit

Use POM when the application benefits from excellent machinability and dimensional stability and the design can be machined with stable workholding.

Watch Points

Confirm wall thickness, hole depth, thread callouts, burr control, cosmetic surfaces, and finish buildup before production.

Quality Planning

Define critical dimensions, inspection method, tolerance class, and documentation requirements before the first article.

TopicPractical Guidance for POM
Design reviewSend 3D CAD, 2D drawings, material grade, finish notes, quantity, and critical-to-function dimensions.
Machining processMTSPi can review whether milling, turning, drilling, tapping, boring, or a combined route is best for the geometry.
Surface finishPlan cosmetic and functional finishing early, especially where coating thickness, polishing, or deburring affects fit.
InspectionUse calipers, micrometers, gauges, CMM, or visual inspection based on tolerance risk and assembly function.

FAQ

Is POM suitable for CNC machining?

Yes, POM can be CNC machined when the grade, geometry, tooling, workholding, and tolerance requirements are planned correctly.

What should I send for a POM machining quote?

Send CAD files, 2D drawings, quantity, material grade, finish requirements, tolerance notes, and any inspection or packaging needs.

Can POM parts be finished after machining?

Often yes. The right finish depends on the material family and part function. Confirm finish thickness and cosmetic expectations before machining.

How do I reduce cost on POM CNC parts?

Use practical tolerances, avoid unnecessary deep pockets or tiny holes, simplify setups, and reserve tight control for functional features.
