Precision Machining for Heat-Resistant, Flame-Retardant & High-Strength ULTEM Parts
Custom Prototypes and Production with Superior CNC Technology

What is ULTEM CNC Machining?

ULTEM® (PEI) is a high-temperature, high-rigidity engineering plastic with excellent creep resistance, dielectric performance, and dimensional stability. With sharp carbide, steady chip load, and controlled heat, ULTEM machines cleanly for aerospace, semiconductor, and medical components.

  • Tooling: Sharp micro-polished carbide; TiAlN/TiCN coatings when abrasive fillers are used.
  • Heat control: Air blast or light mist; avoid localized overheating and stress whitening.
  • Feeds/Speeds: Moderate SFM with consistent chip load; add a light finish pass on show faces.
  • Workholding: Rigid/soft-jaw fixturing; minimize vibration on thin walls and tall ribs.

Key Considerations

Dry stock if moisture pickup is suspected. For tight stability on large or thin parts, use a rough → condition/anneal → finish approach. Avoid sharp inside corners and aggressive deburr.

For cosmetic consistency, climb-mill and apply a light skim pass to unify surface texture and color.

Precision ULTEM CNC Machining

3/4/5-axis ULTEM CNC milling for precision brackets and housings

3, 4, 5-Axis CNC Milling

Tight-tolerance pocketing and contouring with excellent dimensional stability. Balanced holders, sharp cutters, and controlled step-over deliver clean edges ready for assembly or finishing.

ULTEM CNC turning/mill-turn for rings, insulators, and manifolds

CNC Turning & Mill-Turn

Smooth OD/ID finishes on rings, insulators, and manifolds. Positive-rake geometry and steady chip load help hold diametric accuracy and reduce haze.

Machinable ULTEM Grades

Pick the grade for the right balance of stiffness, heat, weight, certification, and ESD performance.

ULTEM 1000 machined parts (3:2)

ULTEM® 1000 (Unfilled)

  • High heat & rigidity, excellent stability
  • Clean machining; finish pass recommended
  • Good dielectric properties
  • Manifolds, covers, brackets

Dry stock if needed; keep steady chip load to avoid edge haze or whitening.

ULTEM 2300 glass-filled 30% bracket (3:2)

ULTEM® 2300 (GF30)

  • Much higher stiffness & HDT
  • More abrasive—use coated carbide
  • Improved dimensional stability
  • Housings, fixtures, structural parts

Reduce SFM, keep firm feed; inspect edge quality frequently to maintain finish and tolerance.

ULTEM 9085 aerospace-grade components (3:2)

ULTEM® 9085 (Aerospace)

  • Favorable strength-to-weight
  • Flame/smoke/tox compliance targets*
  • Cabin/air-handling components
  • Consistent machinability

*Confirm program-specific FST and documentation requirements. We can align machining/inspection with your spec.

ESD-safe ULTEM fixture and tray (3:2)

ESD / Conductive ULTEM®

  • Static-safe fixtures, covers, trays
  • Fillers alter chip formation
  • Surface resistivity to spec
  • Stable at elevated temps

Tune feeds for sharp edges; verify resistivity targets and cleaning/handling practices for your process.

Material Machining Guide

ULTEM CNC Machining: Selection, Process, and Quality Notes

ULTEM is commonly considered for high-performance plastic parts for heat, electrical, and structural applications. It is selected because of temperature resistance and strength. For CNC machining, the final result depends on material grade, toolpath strategy, tolerance allocation, surface finish, and inspection planning.

Good Fit

Use ULTEM when the application benefits from temperature resistance and strength and the design can be machined with stable workholding.

Watch Points

Confirm wall thickness, hole depth, thread callouts, burr control, cosmetic surfaces, and finish buildup before production.

Quality Planning

Define critical dimensions, inspection method, tolerance class, and documentation requirements before the first article.

TopicPractical Guidance for ULTEM
Design reviewSend 3D CAD, 2D drawings, material grade, finish notes, quantity, and critical-to-function dimensions.
Machining processMTSPi can review whether milling, turning, drilling, tapping, boring, or a combined route is best for the geometry.
Surface finishPlan cosmetic and functional finishing early, especially where coating thickness, polishing, or deburring affects fit.
InspectionUse calipers, micrometers, gauges, CMM, or visual inspection based on tolerance risk and assembly function.

FAQ

Is ULTEM suitable for CNC machining?

Yes, ULTEM can be CNC machined when the grade, geometry, tooling, workholding, and tolerance requirements are planned correctly.

What should I send for a ULTEM machining quote?

Send CAD files, 2D drawings, quantity, material grade, finish requirements, tolerance notes, and any inspection or packaging needs.

Can ULTEM parts be finished after machining?

Often yes. The right finish depends on the material family and part function. Confirm finish thickness and cosmetic expectations before machining.

How do I reduce cost on ULTEM CNC parts?

Use practical tolerances, avoid unnecessary deep pockets or tiny holes, simplify setups, and reserve tight control for functional features.
